Long Song Description:
The Colors of Cello album is the result of two major foci; learning more music composition techniques and learning more about the most incredible instrument, the cello.
The compositions on this reel appear in the same sequence as they appear on the CD.
I wanted to write various music for the cello to include not only music for solo cello but music featuring the cello and other instruments including the piano, clarinet, oboe and violin used as accompanyment, with the intent that these instruments would provide an asset to the composition yet not detract from the beautiful sounds of the cello. Difficult, yes, but I think these pieces reflect some of the possibilities that were behind the intent to produce this album.

Story Behind the Song:
I enrolled into an orchestration class through Alexander University studying under Stephen Hill. His insightful and skillful teaching has helped me to learn more about the process of music composition, arranging for strings, as well as the limitations of the stringed instruments.
While learning about the Cello, I listened to a multitude of works by other composers for this instrument. As a result of this exercise, I chose to write enough pieces to put a twelve song CD together. With further guidance through Mr. Hill and Peter Alexander, support and encouragement from my Detroit friend Greg (cellist) and another cellist friend Martha, in Beloit Wisconsin, they provided inspiration and guidance in completing the writing for this CD featuring the cello.
It was my preference to use live performers and real cellos when producing this work, however, there were many problems getting to this stage. As result I ended up completing this collection of twelve pieces using the EWQLSO Platinum Edition sound samples to produce the final work.
I firmly believe that there are no samples that are capable of producing the sounds created from a real instrument performed by a well trained instrumentalist. The subtle nuances of the instrument and the artistry brought into play from the performer are two of the major factors that reduce the end products character as compared to live performances. It is my preference to use live performers. How do I get there? My current dilemna.
